BRUNSWICK — George Ira Baldwin, 91, of Brunswick, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 at his home.

He was born in New York City on January 9, 1926, the son of George Alfred and Kathryn Caulfield Baldwin. The family lived in Baldwin, Long Island, where he graduated from Baldwin High School in 1943. After graduation, he was accepted into the Navy V-12 program, attending St. Lawrence and Northwestern Universities. As an Ensign, he served in a Navy Scout and Raider Battalion on a LSM in the Amphibious Corps. Discharged as a Lieutenant in 1946, he returned to St. Lawrence and graduated with a degree in Psychology in 1948. While at St. Lawrence, Mr. Baldwin captained the football team, was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and was selected to be listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

In 1950, he married Joy Ambrosio. They moved to Ramsey, New Jersey and raised four children, George Charles, Barbara, Christopher, and Eric. While living in Ramsey, Mr. Baldwin was President of Little League, Chairman of the Recreation Committee, Town Councilman and Chairman of the School Board.

He joined United States Rubber Co. (the name was later changed to Uniroyal, Inc.) in 1948, where he worked as a salesman, Sales Manager, and Director of Consumer Advertising. He joined Grey Advertising in NYC in 1962 as a Vice President, Account Supervisor, handling accounts like Cities Service Oil Co., B.F. Goodrich, American Motors, Champion Building Products, Virgin Islands Tourism and Congoleum Corp. In 1983, he accepted a position at Bath Iron Works in Bath, ME as Director of Communication Services. One of his responsibilities was supervising the launch ceremonies of the CG51 cruisers and the DDG51 destroyers built at the shipyard. He was also responsible for introducing the use of internally produced videotapes as training tools.

Mr. Baldwin retired in 1995 and spent his time as a volunteer for the American Red Cross. He has been Chair of the local Mid Coast Chapter Board of Directors, Chair of the Maine State Service Council, and Chair of the Planning Committee of the Northern New England State Service Council. He was awarded the prestigious Clara Barton Volunteer Award in 2001. Mr. Baldwin was also a member of the Brunswick Golf Club and an Ecumenical Minister at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joy Baldwin of Brunswick; three sons, George Charles of Austin, TX, Christopher of Brunswick, and Eric of Portland, ME; a daughter, Barbara Reilly of Topsham; and nine grandchildren, Kate, Andrew, Jacob and Abigail Baldwin of Austin, TX, Samuel and Lindsay Baldwin of Brunswick, and Leigh, Jamie and Nicholas Reilly of Topsham; and two great grandchildren, Brynn Maguire and Caiden Reilly.

A memorial service will be held from 2 – 3 PM on October 22nd at Thornton Hall, 56 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, Maine.
