HARPSWELL

A Harpswell man apparently fell asleep at the wheel and struck a utility pole along Route 123 in Harpswell Thursday morning, according to police.

The crash was reported at approximately 9:20 a.m.

According to Patrol Captain Scott Stewart, Timothy Gough, 27, of Harpswell was driving a 2004 Subaru Baja south on Route 123 when the crash occurred.

Gough was allegedly returning from work when he fell asleep, drove off the right side of the road, struck a telephone support pole and then a tree. He sustained minor injuries but the vehicle was totaled.

Harpswell Neck Fire Department and Central Maine Power responded.

CMP spokesperson Gail Rice said 1,689 customers in Brunswick and Harpswell were without power Thursday from approximately 2:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. so the pole could be repaired.
