Michael Joseph Flaherty
PORTLAND – Michael Joseph Flaherty, a resident of Portland, passed away on Dec. 22, 2025, at the age of 80. Known for being hard-working, humorous, and loyal, Michael left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Michael was born on Nov. 29, 1945 in Portland to John Sr. and Alice (Handlon). Michael grew up on Flaherty Farm, where he knew he could always come back to. He attended Scarborough High School, and soon after joined the United States Army.
While serving in the United States Army, he served with honor and dedication. Soon after, he built a career as a Lineman for New England Telephone, retiring after 40 years of service.
For over 30 years, Michael was married to the love of his life, Nina. Together, they built a life filled with love and companionship.
Michael had a passion for his dogs and his motorcycle. He enjoyed traveling and spent time living in Florida, while also maintaining a seasonal camp in Wassamki Springs.
He was an active member of the community, being a part of the American Legion Post 076. He also volunteered every week at the Westbrook Food Pantry, showcasing his dedication to helping others. Alongside Nina, he enjoyed bringing their therapy dog to those in need while living in Delaware.
Michael was predeceased by both of his parents, John Sr. and Alice, his stepmother, Doris; his wife, Nina; his sister, Judy, and his brother, Steven.
Michael is survived by his brothers John Jr. (Connie), and Bruce, sister, MaryJo (Dale), half-sister, Susan (Edward), half-brother, James; son, Gordon (Julie), daughter, Melissa (Bud); grandchildren, Ryan and Allie; great-grandchild, Patrick; and many nieces and nephews.
Michael’s family would like to express many thanks to the staff at Maine Medical Center as well as the excellent staff at Gosnell for their care and support.
A burial at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland, with military honors will be held in the spring.
