GEORGETOWN – Deborah Thornton Pendleton – wife, mother, daughter, and friend – passed away on Friday, Jan. 16, 2026, at the age of 70. She was born in Cambridge, Ohio, on the same day, in 1956. At the time of her passing, she was a resident of Georgetown.

Deborah was raised in Ohio, New Jersey, and North Carolina, where she attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. A lifelong lover of art, literature, photography, and cinema, Deborah had an immensely varied career. Among her favorite roles were her work as a staff photographer on archaeological digs in England; as photo-editor at Image Bank in New York, London, and Australia; and her longtime venture as a rare-book dealer.

Following her marriage to Philip Pendleton, Deborah made her home in Baltimore, Maryland; Oley, Pennsylvania; and finally Maine. Deborah cherished every summer in Maine, finding it to be the ideal human and natural environment, and was grateful for the years in Portland and Georgetown when she called it home.

Deborah’s mightiest efforts were reserved for the historic properties she restored and the wonderful environments she created for living and entertaining. Her homes embodied her love of nature and of cultural expression. She could bring out a property’s most attractive and comfortable elements, and was known and admired for her culinary talents and abilities as a hostess.

In the last 20 years, Deborah endured three successive cancers with stoic strength and courage. The most recent came suddenly; Deborah passed unexpectedly on her 70th birthday.

She is survived by her husband Philip, son Nathaniel, mother Jeanne Statum, brother Michael Thornton, and her many extended family and friends.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Maine Coast Heritage Trust or to Maine Audubon.
