Gregory Strong Sr.

YARMOUTH – Gregory Strong, Sr. passed away peacefully on Feb. 19, 2026, surrounded by family, holding his wife, Janmarie’s hand.

Greg was born on May 20, 1951 in Portland to Charles Pratt Strong and Charlotte Katherine Strong (née Patrician). He graduated from Concord Carlisle High School as the President of his class in 1969 and graduated from Tufts University in 1973.

Greg was at his most peaceful when he was at the camp that has been owned by the Strong family since 1951. There, he spent countless hours with friends and family, whom he’d entertain with long boat rides across Long Lake. He had a story for seemingly every house and locale on the lake, recounting various misadventures and experiences that shaped him from childhood into his later years.

Greg and Janmarie met through mutual friends in 1992. Janmarie actually stood him up on their first date but Greg was persistent and won her over. They were married on Sept. 3, 1994 at Spurwink Church in Cape Elizabeth.

Greg and Janmarie were blessed with the arrival of sons Gregory “Rory” (1995) and Brennan (1998). The family traveled extensively when the boys were young, visiting Ireland, Greece and Italy. Other favorite local places were Mount Washington, Storyland and the Naples causeway.

Greg and Janmarie had many travel adventures, including cruises to the Caribbean, Portugal and Alaska. They were lucky to see live performances of Paul McCartney, Barry Manilow, Joss Stone, and the Beach Boys.

Greg also enjoyed spending time with friends at the Oxford Casino, where he was known for his charm and skill at the blackjack table. There, he introduced Rory to the blackjack table.

Greg accompanied Janmarie to her 50th Catherine McAuley High School class reunion at Bruno’s Restaurant in May 2023. He graciously agreed to be the reunion photographer and many group photos were taken that afternoon.

Greg had an extremely successful career as a financial planner and was devoted to his clients through the very end.

He was absolutely devoted to and had a great love for his family, which always included wonderful dogs. He was always supportive of his children’s interests and activities. He taught his children all the important Dad lessons, and they could count on him being at sports games, concerts, and giving rides anywhere they needed to be, whether down the street for practice or all the way to Northern Maine for a hike.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janmarie Toker Strong and his children, Alexandra, Gregory “Rory” and Brennan. He is also survived by granddaughter, Vivienne and son-in-law, Rich Wescott; brother, Charles and sister-in-law, Cheryl, sister, Betsy and brother-in-law, Michael Ussery; and many friends and extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St., Portland. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.
