Mary Jo Anderson

SOUTH PORTLAND – Mary Jo Anderson (Young), 66, of South Portland passed away peacefully at home on April 19, 2026 surrounded by those she loved.

She was born Oct. 19, 1959 and grew up and lived in South Portland most of her life. In her younger years, she was known as “Mighty Joe Young,” a standout athlete at South Portland High School, where she broke records in track and field before graduating in 1978.

Mary Jo loved to travel on the Scotia Prince where she met Clarence Anderson, who she married in 1986. Mary Jo was a lifelong caregiver, She dedicated 44 years of her life to working at South Portland Nursing Home, now known as Pinnacle, where she went above and beyond for those in her care.

Even as her own health declined, she never stopped putting others first. She was known for her kindness, her strength, and her stubborn spirit. Mary Jo was a fierce fighter, living with multiple sclerosis since the age of 30, facing each challenge with resilience and determination.

Mary Jo was predeceased by her parents, Helen Palmer and Albert “Buddy” Young; and long time companion, Roger Brown.

She is survived by her beloved children, Antonio Anderson and Caitlyn Conner and her husband, Travis Conner. She also leaves behind her siblings, Dorna Girardin, Rose West, Lisa Taylor and her husband Paul Taylor, and Donald Young and his wife Karen Young; along with many extended family members, and her closest friends.

A graveside service will be held May 13 at Highland Memorial Cemetery in South Portland at 1 p.m. A celebration of her life to follow at Coppersmith Tavern and Table.
