Ervin “Erv” Edward Rice
BRUNSWICK – Ervin “Erv” Edward Rice, 94, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Dec. 25, 2025. He was born on Aug. 24, 1931, to Doris and Charles Rice. On May 17, 1952, he married the love of his life, Claire.
Erv proudly served 30 years in the United States Navy, rising through the ranks to commander. He treasured time with his family, enjoyed dancing with his wife, volunteering at BNAS Retired Affairs Office, gardening, lecturing church services, birdwatching, socializing, following the Bowdoin men’s hockey team for many years (GO YOU BEARS!), and being Santa. He shared his love of Christmas and kindness with others by emphasizing the importance of loving, sharing, and caring.
Erv is survived by his children, Charles and wife Ruth, Doug and wife Brenda, Donna and husband Bob DeLong, James and wife Rebecca, and John and wife Louise; by 10 grandchildren and their spouses or partners; and by 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ronald and Mary Bernard and sister-in-law, Jeanne Bernard; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Doris Sabo and Charles Rice, his stepfather, George Sabo; and his beloved wife, Claire.
A Mass for Erv and Claire will be held May 16, 11 a.m. at St. Charles Church, McKeen Street, Brunswick. A military service will take place on May 18, 12 p.m. at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 143 Blue Star Ave., Augusta.
