A husband and wife were killed in a car crash Sunday morning in Sanford, authorities say.
Sanford police say Arthur Karcher, 86, and Catherine Karcher, 85, were driving south on Main Street just before 9 a.m. when their car drifted across the center line and hit an oncoming SUV.
The Karchers and the driver of the SUV, a 32-year-old Lyman woman, were taken to a hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, police said in a news release Monday morning.
The Karchers later died of their injuries.
The Lyman woman was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Deputy Police Chief Matthew Gagne said. Gagne said Monday that he did not have an update on the woman’s condition.
Sanford police are investigating the crash and said weather and road conditions were not a factor.
Arthur Karcher was previously a member of Alfred’s planning board, town administrative assistant Karla Bergeron-Wilcox said Tuesday.
