Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

On Baseball: No relief in sight as Red Sox continue downward spiral
BOSTON – Nick Swisher’s grand slam could not have been more ignored. When Swisher swatted his slam in the seventh inning, any baseball fan near a television was watching Chicago White Sox right-hander Phil Humber finish his perfect game. Anyway, Boston still led the Yankees 9-5 after the slam. What was the big deal? Surely, […]

On Baseball: Plenty of highlights, just not in the game
BOSTON – A collection of thoughts on a 100th anniversary day. The 100th anniversary celebration for Fenway Park brought chills and memories Friday afternoon. The post-celebration event (i.e., the game) brought a reminder that this 2012 Red Sox team is looking flawed. And few teams can expose your flaws like the Yankees. Having the Yankees […]

Kevin Thomas: What was Valentine trying to say about Kevin Youkilis?
He experienced a couple of rough days in the workplace, but Kevin Youkilis’ job performance had improved. Next thing Youkilis knows, however, his boss openly questions Youkilis’ ability and desire. Kevin Thomas: Sox need Crawford more than ever
BOSTON — Jacoby Ellsbury is out for at least six weeks. Maybe more. In the short term, the Red Sox have called up Che-Hsuan Lin to be their fourth outfielder. And Cody Ross has moved to center field. But another outfielder will be relied on heavily to fill the spark-plug role Ellsbury played for Boston. […]

On Baseball: A victory without splash, but the Red Sox made waves
BOSTON – Glitz and glamour. Pomp and pageantry. Those usually describe home-opening ceremonies at Fenway Park. Friday’s opener seemed a little toned down, except for a classy national anthem performance with chorus and brass. Maybe the front office is holding back until the certain-to-be over-the-top celebration marking Fenway’s 100th anniversary. As for the baseball, it […]

Sea Dogs Notebook: Even in Portland, Guillen hit a nerve
PORTLAND – When Miami Marlins Manager Ozzie Guillen’s comments about his admiration for Fidel Castro became public earlier this week, it caused an emotional firestorm in Miami and beyond. Guillen, who was suspended for five games, has apologized to everyone he can, especially the Cuban-Americans who were deeply offended by his remarks. “But I don’t […]
