Cape Elizabeth 11

Lake Region 0

Soccer games are usually low-scoring affairs, but sometimes there are exceptions, and an exception occurred at Cape Elizabeth Monday night.

Joe Wolanski found the back of the net three times to lead Cape Elizabeth to an 11-0 rout of Lake Region at Hannaford Field. Andy Lynch and Marcus Goldbas each tallied a pair of goals for the Capers.

The Capers scored four goals in the first half to put the game out of reach. The first goal came just under eight minutes into the game on a nifty touch pass from Ben Brewster. Brewster got the ball near midfield and lobbed a pass over the Lake Region defense. The ball landed just in front of Wolanski, who finished with a shot past Laker goalkeeper Matt Langadas.

Cape doubled their lead eight minutes later. Blake Barritt brought the ball up into the attack zone and passed to Goldbas, who made a pass across to Wolanski, who was coming in strong. Wolanski found the back of the net for his second goal of the night.

“We played very well in the first half,” said Cape Elizabeth head coach Ben Raymond. “The kids moved the ball well. They stayed within their system of play and didn’t try to do too much individually. We moved the ball well, I think most of the goals were assisted.”

Another few minutes passed and the Capers found the back of the net once again. This time it was Lynch who scored. David Riker made a pass that Lynch knocked into the net on a one-timer and Cape led 3-0.

The Capers made it 4-0 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. Goldbas was rushing up the field with the ball and drew the Lake Region defense. He was able to pass the ball ahead through traffic to Nick Breed, who finished with the goal.

“We try to tell them ‘you have to continue to play the way we’re going to be playing the rest of the year, you’ve got to continue to get better,'” Raymond said. “We are working hard at moving the ball, moving without the ball and working on our runs. In the first half we had a bunch of little offsides here and there but it’s OK because they’re making those runs. They were just a hair off, but you could see that improved as that half went on they would get offside, but the kids adjusted.”

The Capers netted another seven goals in the second half as they continued to dominate. The first second half goal came less than three minutes after play resumed. Lynch tallied his second score of the night on a one-timer from Zach Breed. Just 62 seconds later Goldbas notched his second goal of the game on a shot from the top of the box.

With 30:36 to go Brewster scored on a corner kick. The ball sailed into the box, but the Lakers were unable to clear it and Brewster stuffed it into the net and Cape’s lead was 7-0. Barritt scored just over a minute and a half later when Riker drove into the corner with the ball and found him in the box all alone.

Wolanski finished his hat trick with a goal very similar to Barritt’s. This time it was Barritt who drove the ball deep into the corner. Wolanski found himself alone in the box and the pass from Barritt was on the mark. Wolanski’s third goal gave Cape a 9-0 lead.

Teddy Smith scored the tenth goal with 24:03 to go and Sam Hallowell scored number 11 with 18:52 to play. The Capers spent the rest of the time keeping the ball out of Lake Region hands to earn their third win of the year. The Capers improved to 3-2-1. Lake Region fell to 1-5.

Raymond is pleased that his team was able to work on some things in a competitive atmosphere and get a win at the same time.

“Fifteen minutes into the game everybody was in and everybody’s playing,” he said of his team. “It’s good for everybody on our team. Everybody gets to play, it’s competitive, its stuff we can do not against our own team; its important stuff.”
