The Scarborough Public Library now offers a SelfCheck service that allows cardholders to check out most library materials by themselves while still ensuring borrower privacy. Library staff will continue to be available at the circulation desk to assist library patrons who seek the human touch.
SelfCheck users will swipe their Scarborough Library cards at the unit and follow touch-screen directions. Borrowers can renew most books, magazines, CDs and DVDs by SelfCheck. Materials such as reserves, VHS videotapes and audio tapes must be checked out by library staff.
Borrowers with expired cards, an accumulation of fines or long overdue items will need to update their card or clear their fines at the circulation desk before using the SelfCheck unit.
The SelfCheck project was funded by the town of Scarborough to support the library’s strategy to increase customer service without adding staff.
For more information about the SelfCheck service, contact the library at 883-4723 or visit the library’s Web site at www.library.scarborough.me.us.
