PORTLAND—The Maine Red Claws named Austin Ainge, 27, their inaugural head coach at a press conference Tuesday afternoon. Ainge is the son of former Celtics’ legend and current team president Danny Ainge.
Austin Ainge has served as a scout for the Celtics and was one of three finalists for the position. He has no prior head coaching experience, but did serve as an assistant at Southern Utah University.
Ainge, like his father, played his college basketball at Brigham Young University, where he averaged 6.6 points and 3.5 assists per game. Ainge was an honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference selection as a senior.
The Red Claws, an NBA Developmental League team affiliated with the
Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats, will begin play at the
Portland Expo in the fall.
