AUGUSTA — A national bicycling organization says Maine is the second most bike-friendly state in the country.
The League of American Bicyclists says Maine rose one spot in its 2011 list from its third-place ranking in 2010. The ratings are based on a 95-question survey across six categories that include legislation, infrastructure and enforcement.
Washington was the No. 1 state, while New Hampshire and Vermont ranked 14th and 15th.
Bicycle Coalition of Maine Executive Director Nancy Grant says Maine’s high ranking is good for bicycle tourism. By promoting bicycling, she says the state benefits by encouraging healthy habits, reducing air pollution and saving money on gasoline.
