Secret Service to investigate false update on Fox account

The Secret Service said Monday it will investigate the hacking of Fox’s political Twitter account over updates claiming that President Obama had been assassinated.

Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie said the law enforcement agency, whose job it is to protect the president, will conduct a probe of the false postings and that “we will conduct the appropriate follow up.”

Hackers broke into the FoxNewsPolitics account early Monday, leaving six tweets reporting that Obama had been shot to death in Iowa. In a statement posted on its website, Fox News called the tweets “malicious” and “false.”

“We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts,” said Jeff Misenti, vice president and general manager of Fox News Digital.

American reported killed after storm upends boat

American tourists on a July Fourth fishing trip were plunged into the Gulf of California after a flash storm upended their boat, killing at least one American and leaving seven others missing.

Mexican officials Monday were considering calling off the search for survivors and turning their efforts to recovering bodies after rescuing 19 tourists and all 16 crew members, who clung to coolers, rescue rings and life vests for hours before some were discovered by other fishing boats as they tried to swim to shore.

Mexican navy Capt. Benjamin Pineda Gomez said he didn’t know the name of the man who died or have any other details about him. Navy, army and state officials reviewed their strategy as divers prepared to search the sunken wreckage for bodies, said State Civil Protection Director Alfredo Escobedo Ortiz.

The 115-foot vessel, the Erik, sank about 60 miles south of the port of San Felipe early Sunday.
