An ice fisherman sets a trap on a frozen section of Androscoggin Lake in Wayne on Tuesday morning.

This section of the lake was solid, but there was open water in the main part.

Ice fishing season began Sunday, but ice has been slow in forming because of unseasonably warm temperatures. The Maine Warden Service advised fishermen this week to exercise extreme caution.

The Department of Conservation also reported this week that even lakes in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway system have inadequate ice to support ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Colder temperatures forecast for this month are expected to change all that.
