GORHAM – Local runners had a good day at a Jan. 4 track meet at USM in Gorham as athletes from Scarborough and South Portland dominated a meet with Deering, Cheverus, McAuley, Portland and Westbrook.

In the end, it was a Red Storm sweep in the team competition as the Storm girls edged out the Red Riots by a score of 219.5-154 and the Storm boys got past runner-up Cheverus 211.5-153. South Portland was a close third, finishing with 149 points.

In addition to the strong performance in the team standings, both the Storm and the Riots had a great many solid individual performances at the meet.

The Storm got wins from Morgan Rodway, who won the junior 55-meter dash in 7.67 seconds, just ahead of teammate Miranda Panico, who finished in 8.01. Rodway also won the junior 200-meter dash in 27.76 seconds, with teammate Katherine Kirk coming in second with a time of 28.44.

Scarborough’s Sarah Rinaldi won the junior high jump with a leap of 4-10 and Nicole Kirk captured the top spot in the senior 55-meter dash in 7.54, part of a Storm sweep that saw Avery Pietras finish second in 7.86 and Jessica Meader come in third in 7.92. Kirk also won the senior 200-meter dash with a time of 26.71.

Scarborough also got wins from: Emily Tolman, who edged out sister Andera in the senior 400-meter dash 1:01.52-1:02.87 and she also took first in the senior long jump with a distance of 15-4.75 and Catherine Bailey, who won the pole vault with a top height of nine feet.

The Riot girls got wins from: Lauren Magnuson, who won the junior 400-meter dash in 1:03.94; Michelle Medici, who win the junior shot put with a throw of 27-2 and Cheyenne Coombs, who won the senior high jump with a leap of five feet.

On the boys side, Scarborough’s Austin Doody won the junior 55-meter dash, edging out South Portland’s Benjamin Michaud 7.09-7.22. The result was reversed in the junior 200-meter dash as Michaud got the best of Doody, 24.99-25.18.

The Storm boys also got wins from: Jerry Kenney, who won the junior 400-meter dash in 55.59; Alex Karam, who won the junior 800-meter run in 2:10.98; Cameron Langlois, who won the junior 55-meter hurdles in 8.60 and the open 55-meter hurdles in 8.77; Michael Pino, who took first place in the junior shot put with a throw of 41-11; Ryan Jamison, who won the senior 200-meter dash in 23.85; Mike Tudor, who was first in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:20.82; Alec James, who was first in the pole vault with a height of 11-6 and Robert Hall, who edged out teammate Wout Moulin in the one-mile run, 4:36.24-4:36.99.

The Red Riots had a good showing in the junior long jump, capturing the top three spots. Duncan Preston won the event with a jump of 18-2, Michaud was second with a distance of 17-7.5 and Matthew Stearns was third with a leap of 17-6.5.
