BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Portland Sea Dogs were the first team to get to Binghamton starter Greg Peavey this season.

But they couldn’t break through on the Mets’ bullpen.

Three relievers combined to shut out the Sea Dogs on three hits over the final 51/3 innings Friday night to secure a 7-5 win.

The Sea Dogs strung together five third-inning singles to wipe out a three-run deficit, then used a Dan Butler triple and Heiker Meneses homer in the fourth to cut into another.

“I thought we managed our at-bats pretty well against Peavey,” Sea Dogs Manager Kevin Boles said. “He’s got a quality arm, and coming into this game he was among the best pitchers in the league.

“We were able to work some counts and drive some balls, and our guys were able to do some things on the bases.”

Peavey, who didn’t give up a run in 102/3 innings over his first two starts, left after a walk put the tying run on with two outs in the fourth.

Erik Turgeon, Robert Carson and Josh Edgin controlled Portland from there, allowing only one runner to reach scoring position.

Sea Dogs third baseman Kolbrin Vitek went 4 for 5 and was in the middle of the streak of five straight hits.

“We’ve been struggling at the plate a little bit so we’re all trying to take a step back and simplify things up there,” Vitek said after raising his average to .308. “We need to have good at-bats and get things rolling, and get some hits back-to-back.

“We did that tonight and were able to stay in the ball game.”

The 11-hit outing was a big step up from being shut out on three hits Thursday night, but the Sea Dogs still dropped to 4-12, the worst record in the Eastern League.

Oscar Tejeda reached on a fielder’s choice and moved into scoring position on a throwing error in the fifth.

Vitek had two hits and Bryce Brentz one against the Binghamton bullpen, but each was stranded at first base.

Brentz entered in the first inning. Juan Carlos Linares, who started the day fifth in the league with a .380 average, suffered an apparent leg injury on the last out of the top of the first. Brentz was in right field when Portland took the field for the first time and finished 2 for 4 at the plate.

Josh Rodriguez of Binghamton reached all five times, going 3 for 3 with a home run, two walks, three RBI and three runs.

When Rodriguez hit a three-run homer with none out in the third for a 6-3 lead, he also knocked Chris Balcom-Miller (1-2) out of the game. Balcom-Miller allowed five hits and walked five.

NOTES: The series continues with 1:05 games today and Sunday, although rain could be an issue. … Prior to Friday night’s game, Portland catcher Jayson Hernandez was placed on the disabled list retroactive to Thursday because of a strained left hamstring. Catcher Matt Spring joined the Sea Dogs from Triple-A Pawtucket and took Hernandez’s place. … Leadoff hitter Jeremy Hazelbaker stole second and third in the third inning, and scored the first run for the Sea Dogs.
