The Polar Bears (10-5, 6-4 NESCAC), ranked 13th nationally, secured the fifth seed for the upcoming New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament. The Jumbos (9-5, 5-5 NESCAC) are ranked 14th and will be the sixth seed in the conference tourney.
Bowdoin will travel to play at fourth-seeded Amherst, while Tufts will play at Middlebury in quarterfinal games on Saturday at noon.
Gorajek tied her seasonhigh with five goals, while Chelsea Albright added two tallies for Bowdoin.
Lara Kozin scored four goals with an assist to pace Tufts, who also got three goals from Gabby Horner, and two tallies and three assists courtesy of Kerry Eaton.
Bowdoin held a 31-19 edge in shots, but Tufts was able to stay close thanks to stellar play by netminder Tess Shapanka, who stopped 14 shots. Connolly made seven saves for Bowdoin.
Men’s lacrosse
Visiting Bowdoin closed out its regular season with a 15-7 loss to fifth-ranked Tufts on Wednesday evening.
The loss dropped the 13thranked Polar Bears to 11-4 (6-4 NESCAC) and places Bowdoin third in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament that begins on Saturday afternoon. The third-seeded Polar Bears will host sixth-seeded Wesleyan in a quarterfinal game at 1 p.m.
The Polar Bears were led by three goals and an assist from tri-captain Keegan Mehlhorn, who gave Bowdoin its only lead four minutes into the action.
The Jumbos netted seven of the next eight and led 7-2 on a goal by sophomore Beau Wood, assisted by Cole Bailey at the 12:02 mark of the second quarter.
Tufts scored seven times in the second quarter and led 11- 5 at intermission.
Billy Bergner had a goal and two assists for Bowdoin. Dylan Hannes, Sether Hanson and Matthew Egan all finished with two caused turnovers and two groundballs apiece. Chris Williamson made 16 stops in the Bowdoin cage.
Baseball
Brandeis (8-29) outslugged Bowdoin 14-7 in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Stein Diamond.
Bowdoin (18-14) outhit the Judges, 15-14, and the Polar Bears owned a 6-3 lead after they scored three runs in the top of the fifth when the first five batters reached base. But, the Polar Bears surrendered six runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the sixth.
Seven of Bowdoin’s nine starters had multiple hits, paced by 3-for-5 performances from Luke Regan and Aaron Rosen. Regan’s double was the visitors’ only extra-base hit. Beau Breton and Kyle LeBlanc each had two RBIs.
Bowdoin starter Jesse Abels lasted four innings and gave up six runs on five hits, but he walked one batter, hit three others and issued a wild pitch. Gabe Faithful suffered the loss.
The Polar Bears will return to action Friday when they open a key three-game NESCAC East set at home against Tufts at 3 p.m. Bowdoin must win two of three games in the series to make the NESCAC Tournament.
