Nearly 5,000 Maine households lost power when a strong thunderstorm rolled through the western part of the state late this afternoon.

Central Maine Power Co. said the majority of customers without power were in Somerset and Kennebec counties. Customers in Androscoggin, Sagadahoc, Oxford, Cumberland and Waldo counties were also affected.

A CMP spokesman said the storm knocked down power lines, but it has now gone through the area and the company expected to have most, if not all, customers reconnected by later tonight.

The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for western Waldo, southeastern Somerset and northeastern Kennebec counties that expired around 5:15 p.m.

The NWS has also issued a flood advisory for small streams in the same area which could overflow banks during a downpour or after. The flood advisory is in effect until 7:30 p.m.
