Nothing is ever etched in stone in this economy, but there’s a good chance the Legends Tour will be back at Falmouth Country Club with the same dates in 2013.

Today is the final round of the Hannaford Community Challenge, presented by Kraft Foods. The pro-am tournament on Thursday was a success, as was the the junior clinic on Friday.

Jason Harris of Harris Golf, owner of Falmouth Country Club, said this about the prospects of the tournament returning:

“It’s contingent on having a good event, a lot of people showing up to watch, raising a lot of money for the charities and Hannaford willing to partner again with us and JBC Golf.”

“Like any major tournament, we’ll have our wrapup meeting soon after the event to discuss this tournament and next year’s tournament.”

Harris Golf clearly would love to see the tournament back next year.

“We have 40 LPGA Legends playing for $200,000. People in Maine and New England have had a chance to see some true greats of women’s golf. We’re on the Legends Tour calendar. The June dates fit their schedule,” he said.

Harris played in the pro-am with LPGA Legend Val Skinner. From his experience and hearing of other players’ experiences in the pro-am, he knew a good time was had by all.

“The pros were very friendly. They were chatting it up and making their amateur partners feel comfortable,” he said.

The Hannaford Community Challenge has had great weather. It’s always a roll of the dice as to what the weather will be when an event is planned so far in advance. The Legends Tour definitely lucked out.

After the Hannaford Community Challenge, the next Legends Tour tournament will be July 15-18 in Atlanta. The Tour will return to New England in September for the BJ’s Charity Pro-Am in Plymouth, Mass. The Legends Tour has nine tournaments this year and hopes to expand to 12 next year.

TEE TO GREEN: The next big event at Falmouth Country Club will be the men’s New England Amateur on July 17-19. The Maine State Golf Association says the state will have 35 players in the tournament.

The first of three qualifying tournaments for the men’s Maine Amateur will be held with 105 players Tuesday at Biddeford-Saco Country Club. On Thursday, 46 players will tee it up in the second qualifier at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Auburn. The final qualifier is at Penobscot Valley CC in Orono on July 3. There are 68 players in the field. Already, 53 players are in the Maine Amateur, July 10-12, at Sunday River Golf Course in Newry. Players from the qualifying tournaments will complete the 132-player field.

The Tom Kimball Celebration Tournament at Val Halla GC has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 28. The tournament was originally scheduled for today, but was changed to avoid conflict with the Legends Tour at Falmouth CC. In addition to the scramble division, the tournament will have an individual and team best-ball format. All money raised will be used to support junior golf by dedicating funds for a new practice green at Val Halla, which has a strong First Tee of Maine program. Kimball was the director of the Maine State Golf Association’s junior program until his death in 2009.
