He was born in Portland on October 11, 1918 the son of Ralph and Nellie (Verrill) Alley. He grew up in Bath and attended school there. At a young age he left school and went to work to help out his family. Albert held a few jobs around town which included being a dishwasher, he worked at the Box Shop, The Coal Pocket and the Wood Shop.
In 1938 he met his best friend and soul mate Miriam “Betty” Coombs, the couple fell in love and were married on July 12, 1939 and the couple resided in Bath. Albert was a very self motivated person and had to provide for his family, so he bought a stand and sold hot dogs on Main Street in Bath. The best dogs in town, but the winters got to him so they soon moved to Boston, as he had a job working for the Boston Naval Ship Yard. A few years had past and the couple realized “The Big City” was not a place to raise a family so they came back home to Maine where Albert was employed at Bath Iron Works as a ship fitter for many years, retiring in 1981.
Albert was a family man and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He enjoyed the simple things in life, it didn’t take much to please him, just taking a ride to New Hampshire was something he looked forward to. Eating out was another thing he enjoyed and his favorite would be seafood, fried clams to be more precise. He also loved to go camping, taking in all the wonders that Mother Nature had to offer. He will be sadly missed by all that loved him.
He is predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Miriam, 2 half brothers Ralph W. Alley Jr., and Robert Alley.
He leaves behind a daughter Catherine R.
Hart and her husband Richard of West Bath, sons, Albert L Alley Jr. and his wife Betsy of Newport News, VA and Thomas E. Alley of Bath; grandchildren, Felicia Hart, Katrina Hart, Suellen Worley and her husband Michael, Kristina Walsh, Edward Alley; great grand daughter Cassandra Walsh; sister-inlaw, Dorothy Coombs of Bath, cousin, Charlotte Frost of Gray and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, August 14th from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the Corliss Street Baptist Church on Corliss Street, Bath. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the church, with Roy Lutz officiating.
The family would like to express a sincere thank you to all the staff at the Plant Home for their many years of compassionate care they gave to their dad, and Horizons for their special care they gave dad these last few weeks at the end of his life. You made it a little bit easier for us knowing that he was being so very well taken care of. THANK YOU!
