BRUNSWICK

Rachel Moroney has few memories of Brunswick’s first girls high school hockey meeting with Mt. Ararat on Jan. 5 at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

The standout Dragons forward left the ice on a stretcher during Brunswick’s 3-0 win after a hard collision into the boards.

Wednesday’s Eastern A rematch at Watson Arena was a game Moroney was looking forward to, and she delivered with two goals and two assists in Brunswick’s 7-2 victory.

“It was good motivation for me to get out there and try my hardest,” said Moroney after helping the Dragons improve to 5-9 with Greely slated to visit on Saturday. “We love playing Mt. Ararat and the rivalry.”

Mt. Ararat fell to 0-13, but not before giving Brunswick a wake-up call as Devon Hutchins beat Dragons goaltender Claire Mendes just 14 seconds into the game to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

“It woke us up a lot,” said Moroney of Mt. Ararat’s quick beginning. “We didn’t want them to get their first win against us.

Gillian Ford’s first of two goals at 5:49 of the first period on the power play tied the game for Brunswick, and Moroney’s first goal with 2:22 left in the opening frame put the Dragons ahead to stay.

After Ford and Moroney scored seven seconds apart in the first minute of the second period and Mt. Ararat’s Clare Briggs answered two minutes later, the game turned into a penalty-filled, hard-hitting affair. In all, 11 penalties were called, the most costly the loss of Eagles captain Anne McIntire, who received a major penalty and a game misconduct.

“Having McIntire leave the game hurt them. She is their best player. We knew that we had to push through,” said Moroney.

“We killed some big penalties after we lost Anne and just showed how much better we are as a team right now,” said Hutchins, who helped the Eagles kill nearly four minutes of a two-man disadvantage to keep the game close. “It was hard to get back. Brunswick just wanted it more.”

The back-breaking goal came with 49 seconds remaining in the second frame as Eliza Brooks converted a ticktack toe pass on the power play, with Moroney and Ford picking up an assist each for a 5-2 lead.

Third-period goals by Grace Rabinowitz and Brooks closed out Brunswick’s 7-2 win.

Rabinowitz, Mary Sasso, Ford and Tessa Cassidy had one assist each for the Dragons, with Brooks and Moroney earning two helpers apiece. Mendes turned aside 17 shots for the win.

For Mt. Ararat, with St. Dom’s visiting today at 3:45 p.m., Carly Raymond picked up an assist, while alwaysimproving netminder Alison Nolan had 24 saves, including two glove saves on Moroney from point-blank range.

“This is a good win for us, and now we need to put some wins together and try to get into the playoffs,” said Moroney, whose team is one spot out of a postseason berth, with Yarmouth/ Freeport less than a point ahead of the Dragons for fifth place. Brunswick hosts the Clippers on Jan. 25.

Brunswick finished three for seven on the power play, while the Eagles failed to score on five chances.
