A Windham man is in jail after leading police on a two-hour manhunt Monday night into early Tuesday morning.

At about 10:30 p.m. Monday, Windham police attempted to stop a 1998 Dodge Avenger on River Road for a traffic violation. The vehicle’s driver failed to stop for the officer and continued on River Road at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

Officers pursued the vehicle, driven by Matthew Higgins, 33, of Windham, for about 7.5 miles to a dead-end street where the vehicle stopped and Higgins fled on foot. A Windham K-9 unit continued pursuit for an additional 2.5 miles and eventually caught up to and arrested Higgins at about 12:30 a.m. May 7, about two hours after the chase began.

Deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the arrest.

Higgins was arrested on charges of criminal speed, eluding a police officer and driving to endanger. He also had several warrants for unrelated charges. He is being held at Cumberland County Jail awaiting an initial court appearance.
