ORONO — Steve Abbott will step down as the University of Maine’s Athletic Director, and return to Sen. Susan Collins’ staff, university officials announced this afternoon.
Abbott, Collins’ Chief of Staff for 12 years, was named interim Athletic Director at UMaine in September of 2010, following a failed run for governor. He became the permanent Athletic Director the following March.
“The University of Maine is a special place to me and my family,” Abbott said. “Given our family history and my lifelong affinity for Black Bear athletics, I am especially pleased to have been a part of the Athletics Department these past three years.”
UMaine has begun a national search to replace Abbott.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
