A 52-year-old Freeport man was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated assault after police say he caused “major internal injuries” during an assault on his girlfriend.
Michael Howard of Freeport was arrested at his home at 10:30 a.m. Friday and taken to Cumberland County Jail, Freeport police Detective Gino Bianchini said Tuesday.
The alleged victim, a 42- year-old Freeport woman, reported the assault to police on Thursday, two days after the alleged incident occurred, according to Bianchini. Charges were elevated from domestic violence assault to aggravated assault due to the extent of the injuries, he said.
Howard was arraigned Monday and released from Cumberland County Jail on Tuesday after posting $1,000 cash bail.
