To the Editor:
The 2010 census indicates the population of Brunswick is 15,175. The land size is 54.34 square miles, giving a population density of 280 people per square mile.
Interestingly, the population density of cities that already house Amtrak train maintenance facilities include Wilmington, Del. (4,186 people per square mile); Beech Grove, Ind. (3,233); and Rensselaer, N.Y. (2,874); among others. The city that comes closest to Brunswick is Rensselaer, with 2,874 people per square mile compared to Brunswick’s 280.
Can we assume people moved here to live in a community with a lower population density?
Who wants to build a typically high-density industrial facility in Brunswick? Who cares about the feel of our town? Can we assume that we will be treated as a small community? Or do we want to “grow” so we can compete and compare ourselves to the above “cities.”
What’s that famous line, “Build it and they will come”— ?

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
