Changing Tides
I would vote this past weekend the best weather weekend of the year, if not the whole summer. I certainly hope we have a repeat performance of the sun, perfect temperatures and overall perfection, but, looking forward, I fear judging from this year’s track record, we should tread lightly when it comes to our expectations for perfect weather.
School’s Out June 20
More than the weather is changing around us. Lake Region High School seniors are officially done attending school, and graduation is on Sunday, June 15. Congratulations and best wishes in their future endeavors. School for SAD 61 lets out on June 20. That is a scary proposition for some parents as they fret about how they will keep them busy, active, and happy all summer! Here’s a suggestion: Mark Snow is once again offering his fabulous and very affordable track and field camp to local students entering grades 1 through 7 at the Lake Region High School track. Camp is only $30 for the nine days and runs June 23-July 3, not including weekends, from 9-11 a.m.
New Town Manager
I will need to learn how to correctly spell the new Town Manager’s name without having to look, so this is great practice. We bid a fond farewell to Derik Goodine and wish him great success in his new job as we welcome Ephrem Paraschak, currently the Town Manager of Denmark, who will take over the role July 1.
Town Beach Changes
Even the Town Beach will have some new additions and changes. The playground equipment now located at the Village Green will be moving down to the beach. Selectmen will be walking the grounds to determine the best spot for it – one that won’t block the view of the lake, but also will allow busy mothers to watch their kids in the water while attending to the younger ones on the playground. The Veteran’s Memorial and the cupola from the Bay of Naples Hotel will also find their new home there. You won’t be seeing the town swimming docks anymore either out on Long Lake. They are being removed for safety issues and are being considered for a replacement barge for the July Fourth Fireworks, and perhaps be used to provide space for more boats to dock.
Fitness Changes
Another change to the Causeway-area businesses is a change-over in the ownership and offerings at the former Causeway Fitness location. Coming soon, a new type of fitness business will be opening, offering fitness classes and event space exclusively. I am proud to announce the opening of an elegant, air-conditioned space that will offer all types of yoga, Zumba, Senior Fitness classes, personal training space, kettlebell, pilates, kids fitness and craft classes, and more. The space will also be available for rental for your next small event, class, business meeting (capacity up to 50). Stay tuned!
WOMB Forum
The fourth annual WOMB (Women’s Outlook on Maine Business) is being held Tuesday, June 17, from 1-4 p.m. at Camp Takajo on Route 35 in Naples. Tickets are offered through advance sales and are $35 for Sebago Lakes Chamber members and $40 for non-members. The event includes a discussion, with Kim Block from WGME 13 as the facilitator, on issues that women in business face often including work and life balance, marketing, opportunities and obstacles, and more. Appetizers and dessert, plus wine and champagne pairings, are also part of the experience. Even more exciting is attendees will be entered into a raffle with two chances to win a spot at Camp Reveille, Joan Lunden’s weekend-long empowerment camp for women, a $745 value. Order your tickets online at www.sebagolakeschamber.com or call 892-8265.
