BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Binghamton Mets (52- 37) smacked three homers and pounded out 15 hits, taking the Eastern League series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (59-30), 11-4 on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium.
The Mets had three, threerun innings and produced 23 baserunners.
Cory Mazzoni (1-0) tossed five innings in his season debut to earn the win for Binghamton. The righty gave up five hits and three runs. Portland starter Brian Johnson (7-2) surrendered a career-high seven earned runs over 2.1-innings on eight hits to suffer the loss.
Travis Taijeron led Binghamton’s attack, going 3-for- 5 with two homers and four RBIs. Brandon Nimmo added a three-run shot, and Jayce Boyd went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. T.J. Rivera added three doubles.
Down 3-0, the Sea Dogs scored one run in the second. David Chester singled and moved to third on Michael Almanzar’s double. Keury De La Cruz drove home his 15th run with a groundball.
The Mets respond in a big way, scoring four runs over the next two innings and knocking Johnson out of the game in the third.
Derrik Gibson tripled and delivered a run-scoring double in the ninth for Portland.
The Sea Dogs and Mets continue their four-game series tonight at 6:35 p.m.
