BAILEY ISLAND — Elaine Gordon Bride, 92, of Garrison Cove, died peacefully on July 26, 2014, at her home with her family by her side.

She was born in Portland on March 25, 1922, the daughter of Carl and Elsie McGowen.

Elaine was a tenacious and forward thinking woman who raised three daughters by herself on Bailey Island.

Elaine wintered in Florida, where she loved ballroom dancing and traveling. She truly loved coming back to her summer home, reuniting with family and walking the beach on Bailey Island.

She worked at the Worumbo Mill for over 15 years and as a server in many local restaurants.

Elaine was predeceased by her parents, brothers Alan and Brian McGowen and her dear sister-in-law Clara McGowen. Elaine is survived by her daughters Laurelei Johnson of Orr’s Island and Florida, Leedra Southard and husband Leon of Southwest Harbor and Florida, Karlyne Helmers of Sanford, Fla., brothers Neil McGowen and wife Barbara of Glenburn, Bruce McGowen and wife Sandi of Lewiston, seven grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

In Elaine’s memory, donations may be made to the Orr’s and Bailey Island Fire Department.

Private services to be held at a later date.
