Chicken Dinner

On Saturday, Nov. 1, a chicken cordon bleu dinner will be served from 5-6 p.m. by the Windham Knights of Columbus at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church parish hall. Proceeds will benefit Operation Tribute, Gorham. The organization provides a Christmas gift for every child in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and upstate New York, who has a parent serving in the military. The menu includes homemade chicken cordon bleu, mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables, hot rolls and butter, homemade desert buffet, coffee, tea and punch. Adults $9 and children 12 and under will be $4. Thanksgiving Baskets

From now through Nov. 3, applications are being taken at Windham Food Pantry for a Thanksgiving Dinner basket. Sign up at the Food Pantry, Monday through Thursday, between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., and bring proof that you are a Windham resident – something like a utility bill that shows your name and address. If you or your business would like to donate turkeys or sponsor a Thanksgiving basket for a Windham family, please contact Collette at the Food Pantry, 892-1931.

Indoor Gardening

Local gardener Bea Osterberg will present a program on Indoor Gardening on Monday, Nov. 10, from 1-2 p.m. in the meeting room at Windham Public Library.

Election News

The Registrar of Voters is always available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Clerk’s Office. All Election Day voting will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Main Gym at the high school. Due to changes in the law if you are planning to vote by Absentee Ballot, you must either vote in person or request your ballots by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30.

Old Fashioned Christmas Fair

Windham Historical Society will hold their Old-Fashioned Christmas Fair on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-9, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Unique gifts for all ages, wreaths, sweet treats, decorations, vintage items and everything is hand-made. At the Historical Society, 234 Windham Center Road.

Holiday Fair

Windham Athletic Boosters will hold their annual Holiday Craft Fair at the high school, Nov. 8 and 9 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. More than 140 crafters, a Children’s Corner, lunch and visit from Santa will be featured.

Thanksgiving Luncheon

A special Thanksgiving luncheon will be served at noon on Thursday, Nov. 13, at Windham Community Cafe?, Unity Gardens, 124 Tandberg Trail. For reservations, call Virginia at 892-3891 by Monday, Nov. 10. Donation is $5; raffles will be held and a 50/50. Music by Bob Gendreau. The menu includes turkey, gravy, mashed potato, stuffing, carrots, cranberry sauce, rolls, pumpkin pie with whipped cream.

Help Wanted

Volunteer workers are needed for Meals on Wheels in Windham. Part-time drivers with mileage stipend available and part-time volunteers to help prepare meals for delivery. Call Virginia at 892-3891.

Veterans Day

VFW Commander Willie Goodman has announced that Veterans Day ceremony and open house, hosted by Windham VFW Post 10643, will be held at the Windham Veterans Center on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and the American Legion Auxiliary will be providing refreshments.

John Herrick of Maine’s Army National Guard will be the keynote speaker and patriotic songs will be performed by the Windham Chamber Singers. Boy Scout Troop 805 will be in attendance assisting the VFW. The winners of this year’s VFW sponsored essay competitions will be introduced and they will read their essays. The theme for this year’s Patriot’s Pen, grades 4-8 is “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans” and the Voice of Democracy theme, grades 9-12, is “Why Veterans are Important to Our Nation’s History and Future.” Following the program, in memory of comrade Stuart (Toby) Pennels, a granite bench in the Memorial Garden will be dedicated. The Windham Veterans Center is located at 35 Veterans Memorial Drive. Turn right just before Friendly’s Restaurant and follow Memorial Drive to the end.

Senior Center

The Lakes Region Senior Center is at White Rock Grange, 33 Wilson Road (off Route 237) in Gorham. On Monday, Nov. 10, the Iris Network will present a program at 10 a.m. about macular degeneration and eye care. Attendees may bring a friend. A “soup to chowder” luncheon will follow and the November birthdays will be noted. $5 for the luncheon. Bingo is held at 10 a.m. on Thursdays. In December, the Senior Center will be moving to its new “winter location” at the UCC Church in North Gorham, 4 Standish Neck Road. All present daily activities and events will be conducted as usual in this new location. More info will follow in the upcoming papers. Moving days, from the Grange, will be Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 24 and 25, any members wishing to volunteer with packing and moving, please call Kim 892-6326 for more information. Help is needed.

Book & Bake Sale

Friends of the Windham Public Library will hold their annual Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Preview Sale will be Friday, Nov. 24, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. $10 fee for each person entering the building. Donations of baked goods may be left in the Children’s Room on Friday. Note any items with nuts, please. No book donations needed. The library is overwhelmed with books – please wait until December for donating more.

Changes to Medicare

On Tuesdays, Nov. 4 and 18, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon each Tuesday from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, Medicare Open Enrollment Period.

In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Please call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for the upcoming seminars or to make one-on-one appointments with Medicare Advocates at 207-396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will continue at the same times and location on first and third Tuesdays of the month in 2015. ‘Almost, Maine’ on Center Stage

Welcome to Almost, Maine, a town that’s so far north, it’s almost in Canada.
