SACO — Linwood Carleton Goodwin passed away at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco on Nov. 28, 2014.
He was born in Alfred on March 4, 1922, the son of Benjamin Adam and Molly Eva Burleigh Goodwin.
As a child, Linwood contracted polio and was told he’d never walk again. Miraculously, he did recover and went on to graduate from Biddeford High School.
He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II and came home to wed Joyce Rouse from Washburn and start their family, living in the same village that his ancestors founded in 1762.
He worked more than 30 years for the Cole Farm Dairy delivering milk door-to-door in Biddeford and Saco.
In the 1960s, he went to barber school and opened a barbershop in Goodwin’s Mills, which he ran till his mid 80s.
In between the milk route and barber shop, he could be found in his garden, growing strawberries commercially and vegetables for his large family. For several years, he and his brother, Leo, operated the L & L Bean Company, growing and selling dried beans. He would joke that he was a “bean counter” as he weighed and packaged them.
Linwood was a lifelong member of Advent Christian Church, where he served as the treasurer and a deacon.
He had a great sense of humor and loved to tease and play tricks on his children and grandchildren. He instilled a love for nature, the woods, and all creatures great and small (except cats ”“ he was terrified of cats). He quietly led a life by example, always finding a way to help others and to be kind and respectful. “A life well lived,” as quoted by one of his many nieces.
He was preceded in death by: a son, Robert Goodwin; a sister, Lucille; and brothers, Benjamin Jr., Harlie, Karl, Glenn and Leo.
Survivors include: his wife of 67 years, Joyce Rouse Goodwin of Goodwin’s Mills; five daughters, Elizabeth Barr of Augusta, Debra Goodwin of Burlington, Vermont, Wanda Small of Goodwin’s Mills, Barbara Pennarom of Portland and Kimberly Meserve of Portland; a son, Kermit Sargent of California; a brother, Clint Goodwin of Dayton; a sister, Ruth Flewelling of Crouseville; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco, on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014 from 3-6 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Goodwin’s Mills Advent Christian Church, 498 Goodwin’s Mills Road in Dayton, with Pastor Nicholas Foss officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in Linwood’s memory to the Advent Christian Church, 498 Goodwin’s Mills Road, Dayton, ME 04005.
