PORTLAND — The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (43- 23-3-4) took the wind out of the Portland Pirates (37-27-7-2) sails for the second straight night, winning 3-1 at the Cross Insurance Arena Sunday evening in American Hockey League action.
The Penguins were holding on to a 3-0 lead until the third period when Brendan Shinnimin spoiled the shutout for goalie Jeff Zatkoff.
The Penguins notched a couple of goals in the first frame to gain an early lead. Andrew Ebbett scored the first one, a shorthanded goal at 15:16, assisted by Josh Archibald. Scott Wilson scored the second, a power play goal at 17:04, assisted by Ebbett and Bryan Rust.
The Pirates got a 5-on-3 man advantage thanks to a hooking call and a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct on Steven Shamanski at 9:53, but they were unable to convert. Soon after the Wilkes-Barre penalties came to an end, Shinnimin scored for Portland at 12:32, assisted by Justin Hodgman and Lucas Lessio.
The Pirates visit Manchester on Friday and host Providence on Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
