WELLS — U.S. Route One near the Kennebunk town line was shut down for several hours Monday, after a vehicle traveling at “excessive speed,” according to police, struck a Volkswagen, trapping the driver in her car.
Tyler Sullivan, 21, of Salem, New Hampshire, was traveling northbound on Route One at around 8:40 a.m. in a 2007 Saab through Wells when, according to witnesses, he attempted to pass another vehicle. Veering into the southbound lane, Sullivan struck a 2015 Volkswagen being driven by Deborah James, 62, of Freeport. Sullivan’s vehicle crossed the roadway before smashing into several trees, while James had to be freed from her vehicle, police said.
James was treated and released at York Hospital, while Sullivan was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition at press time. Police shut down Route One while they reconstructed the accident. At press time, there was no word on whether charges would be filed
