Brunswick police are investigating the discovery of a body in the New Meadows River at Sawyer Park on Tuesday morning, but say there are no obvious signs of a crime.

Cmdr. Marc Hagen said a person walking in the area off Bath Road at 9:40 a.m. saw the body floating in the river and called police.

Police believe they know the man’s identity but are not releasing it because they have not located his family. The man is in his late 40s to early 50s, Hagen said.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office has the body and was scheduled to perform an autopsy.

While there are no signs of injuries to the body, Hagen said police will conduct a thorough investigation to be sure there is nothing criminal involved.
