SANFORD — Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission is moving from Springvale to Saco later this month.
The move was announced in the latest edition of the agency’s newsletter.
Long a fixture in Springvale, the move to a suite at Saco Island provides additional space and, according to director Paul Schumacher, perfectly suits the agency’s needs.
He said the move allows the staff to engage all the communities in the region with no disruption in service.
Founded in response to a need for a coordinated effort for economic development and resource management, SMPDC has been conducting economic development, environmental, land use and transportation planning and providing technical assistance to the municipalities in the region for 50 years.
Within the last few years, SMPDC changed its name from Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission to reflect the agency’s expanded role in community development, housing and brownfields redevelopment. A Council of Governments enabled by state statute, SMPDC includes 39 communities in York, southern Oxford and Cumberland County and the county of York itself as members.
The agency will be situated at Suite 1400, Saco Island around Oct. 21. At that time, the new phone number will be 571-7065 and the fax number will be 571-7068.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
