Robert P. Deeley, bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, visited Holy Cross School in South Portland last week learning about science projects from third- and fourth-graders and reading books to the younger children, among other activities.
Deeley also spoke to the students about the importance of the Holy Year of Mercy, which was declared by Pope Francis, and congratulated the Holy Cross students for the many community service projects they’ve already completed, according to Dave Guthro, the diocese spokesman.
While visiting a first-grade classroom a student asked Deeley what his favorite subject was when he was a first-grader himself. He said, “Reading. When you read you get to learn about different people, places and times in history. That’s wonderful.”
The bishop’s visit ended with a special prayer service, attended by all Holy Cross students, staff and faculty. Following the service, students presented Deeley with gifts, including a dish with a painted cross that included the thumbprints of every Holy Cross student.
