Even while I’m undergoing treatment for lymphoma, my biggest fear is falling – many older adults experience a fear of falling. For some of us, this fear can limit activities, which can result in physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Help is available.
“A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls” is a program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. The Lakes Region Senior Center, 40 Acorn St. in Gorham is offering this program, presented by the Southern Maine Agency on Aging. It’s an eight-week program held on Fridays from 9-11 a.m., starting April 15. A Matter of Balance is open to everyone, but space is limited to 15 participants. The cost is $20 for all eight sessions, payable by March 16. Sign up at the Senior Center or call Blanche Alexander at 892-5604 to make a reservation.
Lakes Region Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. All seniors in the Lakes Region are welcome to stop in daily for coffee, tea, socializing, puzzle table or a fun activity of your choice. Weekly activities include:
Monday – mahjong; Tuesday – crafts, cards, games; Wednesday – memoir writing group the second and fourth Wednesday of the month; Thursday – table games; Friday – art workshop.
On Monday, March 14, a boiled dinner luncheon is at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $8. The menu is corned beef, onions, potatoes, carrots, turnip, cabbage, soda bread and dessert. Magician Woody Woodward will perform after luncheon at 12:30. Everyone is invited to bring a nonperishable item to be donated to the Gorham Food Pantry. This event is open to the public.
