Frosty’s Donuts was scheduled to open its latest retail location this morning at 700 Lisbon St. in Lisbon Falls, according to co-owner Shelby Omdal.
“We’re not a city business at all. We’re more of a Main Street business,” she said.
The building they found in Lisbon was a prefect fit for the company, she said. Frosty’s looks at whether or not a town is growing and if there is other viable business going on when deciding where to open shop.
The town granted Frosty’s a loan, Omdal said, which allowed Frosty’s to purchase the building and do the substantial renovations that were needed.
The project has involved about two months of solid construction and involved a burst pipe that required the owners to gut the structure completely.
“It’s always nice when we can go in somewhere and kind of partner with the town,” she said.
Tracey Steuber, Lisbon’s economic and community development director, said the town is very excited to welcome Frosty’s Donuts as a downtown business.
She said the business is well known throughout Maine for their famous donuts, “and we are honored to have them call Lisbon part of the Frosty’s family.”
Steuber said the town will soon have $150,000 available through the state for facade improvements for businesses which should help continue revitalizing this area of Lisbon. Any growth that occurs creates a domino effect, she said, and there is momentum to enhance this area. More than 16,000 vehicles travel Route 196 and will now pass Frosty’s Donuts.
“That’s why we’re so excited that (Frosty’s) made Lisbon part of that family,” Steuber said. “They have a lot of energy and are very community oriented and a very good, solid company.”
Frosty’s Donuts now has five retail locations and a bakery at Brunswick Landing that produces 6,000 to 8,000 donuts a day — a volume that will triple come summer.
A quiet opening was planned for today so the typical line out the first door the first day wasn’t anticipated. A photo of the new storefront posted on Positive Change Lisbon’s Facebook page last week drew hundreds of shares the first day.
“I think Lisbon is ready for us,” Omdal said.
Every store is different and some do more business than others. The Lisbon Falls location will be open 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. six days a week and will likely close early, at 2 p.m., on Sunday.
There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new location on Friday, May 13 at 9 a.m., according to Steuber.
