SANFORD — After five lead changes, the homestanding Sanford softball team took a sixth-inning lead and never gave it up to beat Biddeford by a 7-5 score on Monday afternoon.
Nicole Main, who led the Spartans with three hits, smacked a two-run triple in the sixth to score Jordan Wilson and Molly Boissonneault to secure the win.
Jen Jones pitched a complete game for the Spartans, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out six. Jones also had two hits at the plate.
Biddeford was led by Erin Martin with a double and Jocelyn Moody and Brook Davis, who provided the RBIs for the Tigers.
Thornton Academ y 11, South Portland 4
Solid offense and pitching led Thornton Academy past host South Portland Monday afternoon.
Libby Pomerleau, Maizie Lee and Hannah Collins led the Trojans with three hits each, while Kaylee Burns, Hayden Campbell and Louissa Colucci each added two.
Colucci also took the circle for TA, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out four. Olivia Howe came on in relief, allowing no hits, while striking out four.
Tennis
Thornton Academy 5, Marshwood 0
Thornton Academy cruised by visiting Marshwood Monday afternoon.
Eva Sachs won her singles match 6-1, 6-0, while Grace Pickering won 6-2, 6-0. Andrea Kucharova also won her singles match 6-1, 6-0.
The Trojans would win both doubles matches, with Emma Nessif and Cordelia Perry completing a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Pilar Salcedo and Claudia de la Hoz Garcia won 6-1, 6-1.
McAuley 5, Sanford 0
McAuley swept Sanford Monday afternoon.
Sanford’s Corinne Laurance fell in her singles match 6-3, 6-3, while Allie Plante fell 6-0, 6-0. Marissa Pond also dropped her singles match by scores of 6-2, 6-0.
Sanford’s doubles pairing of Alaina Parison and Hanna Miller won its first set 6-3, however dropped the final two 6-2 each.
Kim Works and Emilee Mathieu also lost their doubles match, losing 6-2, 6-1.
Kennebunk/Wels 3, Waynflete 2
Despite dropping its first two singles matches, Kennebunk/Wells rebounded to secure a hard-fought win over Waynflete.
Roemary Campanella fell in her singles match 6-2, 6-0, while Jenna Kuun lost 6-4, 6-2. Charlie Bigbee then won her match 6-1, 6-0 to earn Kennebunk’s first point.
The Rams won both doubles matches. Olivia Hiken and Amelia Nelson won 6-1 and 6-0, later Anna Kate Luddy and Grace Mastrangelo won 6-1,6-2.
Windham 5, Masabesic 0
Massabesic’s singles struggled in Monday’s match against Windham, with Acadia Byther falling 6-0, 6-1, Thyme Whitten falling 6-0, 6-0 and Emily Scavoni losing 6-0, 6-1.
Despite ultimately dropping both doubles matches, the Mustangs had some success in the process. Michelle Radley and Joanna LaFrance won their first set 6-4, however dropped the second two 6-1, 6-2.
Alana Poulin and Katie Dupuis lost 7-5, 6-1.
