The high school tennis playoffs have arrived, with several area teams looking for postseason glory and a chance to lift the state championship hardware.
The Morse Shipbuilder boys went far last season, reaching the Class B South Regional final before falling to Cape Elizabeth, 4-1.
Morse is looking for a repeat performance this year after compiling a 10-2 mark, good for the No. 2 seed, led by brothers Thomas and Matthew Jarmusz.
The Shipbuilders’ only setbacks of the season came against Waterville and Lincoln Academy by 3-2 scores. Morse is slated to host No. 7 Freeport (4-8), tentatively on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
“I don’t know much about Freeport except for what has been reported,” said Morse coach Steve Boyce. “I understand that like us they have brothers playing at number one and number two singles. Nathan Smail made it to the singles tournament, which tells me he is skilled. The key for us will be how our doubles teams play.
“I am happy the way our season has gone. With a good bounce here or there, we could have duplicated last year’s record. This is particularly gratifying as, besides our one- and two-singles, my team consists of seasonal tennis players.”
The Falcons went 4-8 during the regular season against tough Western Maine Conference opponents.
Elsewhere in Class B South, Lincoln Academy is the top seed and hosts Mountain Valley in the 1-8 matchup. Also, Yarmouth, the No. 6 seed, goes to No. 3 Cape Elizabeth, and No. 4 Gardiner hosts No. 5 York.
The Morse girls also have put together a superb season, claiming the Class B South’s top seed with an 11-1 mark. The Shipbuilders will entertain either No. 9 Gardiner or No. 8 York in the quarterfinals. Morse beat Gardiner twice by 5-0 scores during the KVAC season and did not face York.
“Our record of 11-1 and first-place finish in Class B South is probably our best finish in recent memory,” said Morse coach Barbara Boyce. “We have a strong group of senior leaders and solid juniors in our line-up, so I felt we had the potential to match last year’s 7-5 record.”
Seventh-seeded Greely visits No. 2 Cape Elizabeth, and third-seeded Yarmouth is home to No. 6 Oak Hill in other quarterfinal matchups.
Class A North
Both the Brunswick boys and girls enter the Class A North playoffs as the No. 2 seed, with the Dragon boys entertaining No. 7 Brewer (4- 8) today at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals and the girls in action at home on Wednesday against seventh-seeded Bangor (5-7). Both matches begin at 4 p.m.
“We went 9-3 in the regular season, and the guys really worked hard to get where they are and are looking forward to the playoffs,” said Brunswick boys coach Sewall Janeway, whose Dragons defeated the Witches on May 9, 5-0. “While we won early in the season against them, we respect them and will not assume anything.”
The Class A North boys are deep, with Hampden Academy the top seed with a 10-2 mark, followed by the Dragons, No. 3 Lewiston (9-3) and No. 4 Mt. Blue (9-3). The Broncos have a bye into the semifinals, while the Blue Devils host No. 6 Bangor and the Cougars entertain fifth-seeded Mt. Ararat, which went 5-7 this season but is the two-time defending Class A North Regional champion, falling both times to Falmouth in the State Class A title match.
“I really believe that all of the top four teams are capable of beating any of the others on any given day,” said Janeway, whose Dragons dropped matches to Lewiston, Camden Hills and Hampden Academy this season. “We know all the teams pretty well and we certainly believe we have an excellent chance of advancing to the state final.”
Mt. Ararat fell to Mt. Blue, 3-2, April 27. The 3-2 score has not been kind to the Eagles, who dropped their final four regular-season matches by the same deficit and went 1-7 in 3-2 matches this season.
“We just have to find the right combination to pick up that third point,” said Mt. Ararat Don Foley.
The Brunswick girls look to return to the State Class A championship after missing out in the Regional final last year against Lewiston, which is the No. 1 seed in Class A North after a perfect 12-0 mark, including a 3-2 win over Brunswick on May 23. However, the Dragons returned the favor with a 3-2 win over Lewiston in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship on Thursday.
Brunswick is 11-1 and rolled to a 5-0 win over Bangor on April 29.
Lewiston faces Skowhegan, No. 6 Brewer visits No. 3 Mt. Blue and fifth-seeded Messalonskee takes on No. 4 Hampden Academy in the other girls quarterfinal matches.
The Regional North finals are slated to be held at the University of Maine on June 7, while the South Regional matches are slated for Bates College in Lewiston June 9.
The Freeport girls, along with the Lisbon boys and girls, and Wiscasset boys and girls missed out on the postseason this year.
