AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine State Police are stepping up traffic enforcement starting this holiday weekend, and continuing through the summer.

State Police will utilize additional troopers, unmarked cruisers and an airplane throughout July and August, the busiest and deadliest period on Maine roads.

Col. Robert Williams, state police chief, said 43 people died in traffic crashes in Maine during July and August last year.

He said traffic enforcement will focus on enforcing seatbelt laws and targeting distracted, aggressive and impaired drivers.
