I’m writing to ask voters to support Kathleen Foley for Scarborough Town Council. As her sister, having known Katy my entire life, what I know better than anyone are the principles that my parents instilled in us. As a kid, I remember how hard my parents worked to provide a Catholic school education for all five siblings – not just because education is valued, but because loving and respecting others is just as important. In our home, we learned honesty, integrity, hard work and commitment. We learned to value diversity and tolerate differences. We argued; and listened; and argued again. And still we loved. In this divisive time, these are the values we want our candidates to share.

Some say sisters are mirrors of oneself, with the uncanniness of being opposites. This is true for us. We are both patient listeners. As a fact person, I believe that policy should be debated with facts. But the words we use, and the way we say them is sometimes more important. That’s where Katy’s strength lies. My sister can bridge the gap between the language of “civility” and real civil discourse. When I am a warrior, Katy is my diplomat. Katy’s success as a teacher and a leader, however, goes beyond strategic civility. Katy is truly sensitive to other’s views, and respects the deliberative process. Yes, Katy will call you back, even when she disagrees with you. She will work for you, but more importantly with you. That’s why she deserves your vote.
