Maine Beer Co. will begin a major expansion of its Freeport facility soon, a Freeport town official says.
Cliff Goodall, chairman of the Freeport Project Review Board, said last week it’s his understanding that Maine Beer Co. is ready to begin its expansion “in a couple of weeks.”
Maine Beer Co., in operation only for three years, will expand to approximately triple the space of its operation at 525 U.S. Route 1. The brewery will increase parking from 30 to 122 spaces, and enlarge the building from 6,000 to 20,330 square feet.
Maine Beer Co. has enjoyed success with its tasting room, outside sales of its craft beers and events in its parking lot.
Owners Dan Kleban and David Kleban were not ready to comment on the project last week.
Earlier this year, Dan Kleban told the Tri-Town Weekly that he and his brother hope to begin construction this fall.
Maine Beer Co. produces 12,000 barrels of craft beer a year in a dozen or so varieties. The company expanded from 3,000 to 5,000 barrels when it moved from Portland to Freeport three years ago.
The Freeport Project Review Board is set to approve a site plan for Maine Beer Co. during the board’s meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 9. A snag with landscaping at the site has been resolved, as well.
Goodall sought and received an enforcement consent agreement from Town Manager Peter Joseph and Fred Reeder, the code enforcement officer. The agreement, Goodall said, allows the company to move forward with a new landscaping plan at the site.
“This is an informal enforcement action,” Goodall wrote in a letter to Reeder, Joseph and Planner Donna Larson. “The approved original site plan had a landscaping plan. None of this landscaping was ever installed.”
Goodall went on to write that the violation started prior to Maine Beer Co. taking ownership and control of the property, and was “not an intentional violation by the current owners.”
Goodall said last week that the town’s proposal to extend a deadline for landscaping to align with the expansion is satisfactory. There are no other significant issues with Maine Beer Co.’s site plan, he said.
“I would anticipate that it gets approved,” Goodall said.
Reeder said that he informed Goodall that the Project Review Board should continue with its review, because Maine Beer Co. has not been cited for any violation.
“The submitted proposal is a resolution,” Reeder said. “The expansion covers the violation. My office didn’t feel there was any reason to cite a violation.”

An upcoming expansion of its Freeport facility will give Maine Beer Co. much more room to operate.

Maine Beer Co. is likely to start its expansion soon, which will approximately triple the space of its operation at 525 U.S. Route 1.
