AUGUSTA (AP) — A new tool installed on Maine’s coast will monitor tides in areas often slammed by storms.
The information gathered by a recently installed tide gauge at a pier in Saco will help groups like the National Weather Service issue flood warnings and evacuation orders.
The data can help predict wave height in the area during passing storms, which will improve forecasts of coastal flooding.
The new gauge is one of 17 along the New England Coast. Its installation is part of the U.S. Coast Guard’s efforts to better prepare for future coastal storms following Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
