The unveiling of new renovations at Freeport High School will take place when students return to classes on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Freeport, Durham and Pownal voters approved a $14.6 million bond in November 2013 to enlarge and enhance the school building. The three towns comprise Regional School Unit 5.

Renovations include more classroom space, a band room plus a new kitchen and cafeteria.

Parents and others who live and work in the RSU are invited to tour the building from 5:30-6:30 p.m., Jan. 4. RSU 5 Superintendent Dr. Becky Foley, Freeport High School Principal Jen Gulko and FHS Assistant Principal Charlie Mellon will be present for questions and answers about the renovation or other concerns.

As noted on RSU5.org, visitors to the enhanced building are asked to enter through a new entrance off Snow Road. This entrance will lead into the new cafeteria. Snow Road is near the existing soccer fields.

The tour comes a week before voters in the three towns will mark up or down ballots for a new 8-lane outdoor track and field on high school grounds. The vote is set for Jan. 10 at respective polling places.

About half of the money to design and build the new track and fields for field hockey. lacrosse, football and soccer has been privately raised by the Tri-Town Track and Field Project. The non-profit group collected $930,000 in cash and pledges. Nike, Inc., pledged $1.35 million to the project. Through these efforts, $2.3 million will go toward the total $4 million project.

Voters will be asked to approve funding about $1.5 million via a multi-year bond. Two articles will be on the ballot. The second article calls for spending $350,000 to light the field, which will allow night games. Beyond night games, a new track will allow FHS to host at home meets for the first time.
