Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Psalm 127:1

Blessing the House

The season of Epiphany has traditionally been a time for house blessings. When a house is blessed, God is invited to enter into, and dwell within each room. By inviting the Holy Spirit into our homes we ask God to make his presence felt in every room of our physical surroundings and to make our home a sacred and holy place in which to live, to love, raise our families and welcome in guests. A home that has been blessed has an aura of peace and solidity. A home without the presence of God is like a home in which the cornerstone is not perfect. If the cornerstone is not perfect in its plumb line the whole building will be distorted, and over time the structure may crumble. In biblical times such a stone literally bound the building together. Jesus is referred to in Ephesians 2:20 as the chief cornerstone. When we build our lives and our relationships around him we build on a solid foundation. Built on the bedrock of our faith in Jesus Christ, blessed by God and filled with the power of the Holy Spirit our homes and our lives can overflow with health, happiness and prosperity.
