George Gervais, the commissioner of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, intends to leave his post next week.
“Under George’s leadership we have seen our economy grow,” said Gov. Paul LePage, in a written statement. “George has worked collaboratively across departments to increase trade and tourism with tremendous success. I thank him for his service to the people of Maine.”
Gervais was confirmed in May 2011, and is the longest-serving DECD commissioner in state history.
He had been working with the department since 2008, serving as development program manager and business development specialist, assistant commissioner, and acting commissioner before becoming commissioner. His resignation is effective June 22.
“I deeply appreciate the opportunities and relationships developed over the last decade at DECD,” said Gervais, in the same release. “I am especially grateful to Governor LePage for the trust and confidence he placed in me as commissioner to help the LePage Administration position Maine as being open for business.”
Gervais had been nominated by LePage in March to head the Maine State Housing Authority, but his confirmation was blocked by Senate Democrats.
