Recently I had occasion to take an excess of cardboard to the container located on Industry Rd. at the Public Works Department, of Brunswick.
Before I deposited my cardboard, I looked to see just how bad the contamination was. It was bad! Lots of trash and just plain garbage. I left my cardboard.
Years ago I was on the “Recycling Committee” and we tried to find ways to encourage residents to participate in the effort to reduce the waste stream. It worked for awhile but people have become careless..
Many people don’t seem to realize that just because you put something into the recycling container, and it gets “taken” by the crew on the truck, it doesn’t mean that it is an allowed item. They are hired to pick up, not police what is in the box or bin.
Eventually, we will lose the Recycling program and you will be paying higher taxes because of it. It doesn’t matter if you are a home owner or a renter. Your rent will go up to cover the excess cost of trash collection because they will no longer be able to sustain the recycling program.
When I worked in the office at the Graham Road Landfill, it was routine to inspect the cardboard dumpsters in order to remove trash that lazy people left there. They couldn’t be bothered to take the trash to the trash container.
I realize that the people that need to read this probably will not.
