Maureen Foley-Hester

FALMOUTH – Maureen Foley-Hester, 71, died unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, July 17, 2022. Maureen was born in Portland, a daughter of Joseph Patrick Foley and Gertrude (Keaney) Foley.

Maureen attended parochial schools, graduating from Cathedral High School in 1969. Maureen was also a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington where she received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Maureen furthered her education receiving a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Southern Maine.

Maureen met her late husband, Charlie, in 1979 whilst they were both active members of the Portland Rugby Club. Maureen was a devoted mother and wife and was very proud of her children’s accomplishments. Maureen enjoyed her life and loved spending time with her large extended family and friends.

Maureen was a dedicated teacher for the Portland School District where she retired after working for 39 years. Maureen was a member of Holy Martyrs Parish in Falmouth. Maureen was an avid skier, golfer and world-traveler. She enjoyed volunteering at the Maine Cancer Foundation.

Maureen had bravely battled colon cancer for the past seven-plus years continuing to live her life the fullest. In recent years Maureen traveled to Spain, Portugal, Italy, skiing the Italian Alps as well as the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, Canada. A longtime season pass holder, in the winter months Maureen could often be found on the slopes of Sugarloaf or Sunday River. Although she may not have been winning any tournaments, Maureen did not let this deter her from constantly trying to improve her golf game.

Maureen was predeceased by her husband, Charles W. Hester; her father, Joseph Foley; and her brother, Martin Foley.

Maureen is survived by her two children, Andrew C. Hester and Bridget F. Hester, both of Falmouth. Maureen is also survived by her mother, Gertrude Foley of Portland; her sister, Sharon McCarthy (Thomas) of North Reading, Mass., her brother, Joseph Foley of Portland, her brother, Kevin Foley (Kathleen) of Windham, her sister, Colleen Foley (Kent Redding) of Milwaukee, Wis., her sister, Cathleen Foley (Dennis Reilly) of Swampscott, Mass., her sister, Patricia Kenney (Barry) of Portland, her brother, Mark Foley of Falmouth; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Sunday, July 24 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Jones, Rich & Barns Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 26 at 10 a.m. at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St., Portland. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
