The Cape Elizabeth Planning Board has unanimously approved the application of a solar array at the landfill located at 21 Dennison Drive in a meeting on May 16. The array will consist of 2,796 modules and be constructed on a 6.5-acre leased section of the existing 198-acre parcel
The application, ER Cape Landfill Solar LLC (Ralph Meima), has been approved for site plan amendments to the Gull Crest site, subject to certain conditions. The conditions include revising the plans for such matters as further specification for plans, mitigation of trail impact, location details. The conditions also require that there is no alteration to the site and that no building permits be issued until those plans have been revised.
A trail at the northwestern section of the landfill will be redirected with new trail connections to Gull Crest to be created.
The landfill is located behind the recycling center, and has been closed since 1997. Other communities have also created solar arrays over landfills, such as South Portland’s 4.7-megawatt solar array that was completed last year.
